Wisconsin Wine Tasting Spotlight: Captain’s Walk

Virtue Coffee and Valor Wine

Our first featured winery has been quite the hit! To kick off Virtue Coffee & Valor Wine’s focus on Midwest wineries, we chose Captain’s Walk Winery, and having them at the helm for our maiden voyage proved a fruitful endeavor. So today, we’re pouring a little extra attention into their story for our Wisconsin wine tasting spotlight.

Captain’s Walk, based in Green Bay, produces reds, whites, rosés, and ports across a wide array of varietals. They range from bold Cabernet Sauvignon and silky Meritage blends to crisp Sauvignon Blanc and aromatic Gewürztraminer. Whether you lean sweet, dry, or somewhere in between, their portfolio offers something truly enjoyable for every palate.

A Fan Favorite: Captain’s Red

One of the most popular pours during their feature at Valor has been Captain’s Red, and for good reason. According to Captain’s Walk, it is

“A highly quaffable, lightly sweet, off‑dry red that is smooth and supple with low tannins,” finishing with “an ecstatic flair of black cherry, elderberry and raspberry.”

It’s easygoing but not boring, vibrant but balanced. It makes for a perfect bridge between casual sippers and wine lovers seeking something with depth.

Pairings from Our Menu

If you’re stopping in for a glass, here are a few Virtue & Valor menu favorites that pair beautifully with Captain’s Red:

  • Duck Wontons with Gochujang Sauce
Spicy-sweet duck wontons meet their match in Captain’s Red, a fruit-forward red with juicy cherry and elderberry notes that soften the gochujang’s heat and elevate the umami.

  • Brisket Flatbread
Brisket’s smoky, savory intensity is mellowed and brightened by Captain’s Red’s fruit-forward charm. The wine isn’t too tannic, so it won’t overpower the dish, but its rich red fruit tones will enhance the meat’s umami and any caramelized onions or glaze.

If You’re Taking a Bottle to Enjoy at Home

Looking for a cozy night in? Try this easy and delicious pairing:

  • Grilled Cheese with Jam & Caramelized Onions
This is comfort food with a little flair, just like the wine itself. A blend of cheddar, gouda, or brie creates creamy richness, while a cherry jam and caramelized onions echo the wine’s black cherry and raspberry notes. Add prosciutto or smoked turkey for a savory twist.

Enjoying it with food or savoring a glass on its own, Captain’s Red delivers easy charm with just enough depth to keep things interesting. It’s the kind of wine that invites you to slow down, take another sip, and maybe even pour a second glass.
